Understand what is inside the file
A P7M file commonly contains a CMS SignedData structure with an encapsulated document. The document could be a PDF, XML file, image or another binary format. Renaming the outer file to .pdf does not remove the container. This opener reads the supported structure and extracts its stored content bytes into a separate download.
Choose the original container and run the opener. The built-in example is a real CMS package containing a small PDF and a self-signed certificate labelled TEST ONLY. It demonstrates that content can be extracted and rendered. It does not demonstrate a trusted signer, production approval or a legally valid signature.
Inspect the content without executing it
The document list shows extracted names, byte lengths, detected preview types and container paths. A PDF preview draws pages to a canvas rather than opening document actions. UTF-8 XML and text appear in a read-only text area; markup, scripts and external links are not executed. Supported PNG and JPEG images use local byte URLs after dimension checks.
An unavailable preview does not necessarily mean extraction failed. A password-protected PDF or unsupported binary format can still be downloaded unchanged. Text previews show at most the first 256 KiB, while downloads retain the complete bounded document. Inspect representative content in an appropriate trusted application when the inactive preview cannot display it.
Retain the signed evidence separately
Download the extracted document and the unchanged original container. The document-only copy does not retain the outer CMS signature structure, and the extracted-document ZIP is not a newly signed package. The original download preserves the bytes supplied to this tool so it can be used in a separate signature-validation workflow.
Extraction does not verify cryptographic integrity, signer identity, certificate trust, revocation, timestamps or legal status. A visible signature-related structure is only a structural observation. If a recipient requires a verified signature, use a suitable validation application and the relevant trust policy, supplying the original container rather than assuming that an opened PDF establishes those facts.
